    Devils Lake, North Dakota....Bruce ‘Doc’ Samson mastered the Devils Lake 
walleye puzzle for the second day in a row and leads the Trilene Midwest 
Pro-Am.  The Minnetrista, Minn., professional angler caught 25.72 pounds 
today for a 59.93 total, with one day remaining in the In-Fisherman 
Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) tournament.

    Samson also won the Devils Lake PWT tournament in 1999, the last time the 
PWT tour visited this lake.  In the past 10 years, the lake has gained 25 
feet of water.  It is nearly the same size as Minnesota’s Mille Lacs and 
Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago, approximately 130,000 acres.  Due to extensive 
road, dike and bridge construction, anglers can access most of the lake.

    On the amateur side, Kevin Corrigan, Des Plaines, IL, leads all amateurs. 
Dale Schmidt, Buffalo, Minn., is second.  Amateurs fish to learn all about 
walleye fishing, areas to fish and share a boat for three days with North 
America’s top professional walleye anglers.  The winning amateur tows home a 
$15,000 Lund/Mercury walleye boat.  The top 40 amateurs win prizes.

    Anglers fished Devils Lake from shallow to deep, from trees to rocks, and 
from one end to the other.  On the final day, pros divulge their secrets 
from the PWT stage at scenic Grahams Island State Park.  The final weigh-in 
begins at 3 p.m., with $250,000 to be awarded to pros and amateurs.  Walleye 
fans are encouraged to attend and learn all they can about Devils Lake.

    Three pounds back from Samson is pro John Peterson, Bemidji, Minn.  And, 
another three pounds back, in third place, is rookie pro Rick Franklin, 
Louisburg, Kansas.  Pro Ted Takasaki, Brainerd, Minn., is in fourth. 
Peterson and Takasaki are presidents of respected tackle companies.  They 
not only build and promote their products, but perfect them under 
tournament-tough conditions.  Peterson is with Northland Tackle; Takasaki is 
with Lindy Little Joe.

    Samson also caught the Miller High Life big fish of day two, an 
8.50-pounder worth $1,000.  Peterson leads the Dee Zee division standings 
for pros fishing the PWT western tournaments.  The top 10 western division
pros will be invited to the prestigious Championship, set for Bismarck, ND 
in September.

    The Miller/In-Fisherman Angler of the Year standings are close, with Gary 
Gray, Oshkosh, Wis., leading by three pounds over hard-charging John 
Kolinski, Menasha, Wis.  The winner nets $25,000.
