Devils Lake Walleyes Open Wide for Bruce ‘Doc’ Samson

    Devils Lake, North Dakota.....Bruce Samson, a medical doctor and a 
professional walleye tournament angler, had the perfect prescription today. 
He caught six walleyes that weighed 34.21 pounds to lead the Trilene Midwest 
Pro-Am on sprawling Devils Lake.

    The In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) pros and amateurs fished 
all corners of this natural lake that has tripled in size over the past 10 
years.   An estimated one million trees have been flooded, creating great 
walleye cover.  Anglers fished  with slip bobbers and weedless jigs.  Some 
rigged old road-beds and rocky points while others trolled crankbaits over 
the flooded cattail marshes (20 to 24 feet deep).

    Samson, Minnetrista, Minn., won the 1999 PWT tournament on Devils Lake, and 
collected a win on Mille Lacs last season.  In 27 PWT tournaments, he has 
won $141,800, and if he maintains his winning ways, will add $53,000 Friday, 
including a Mercury-powered Lund 20-foot boat on an Eagle trailer.  The top 
amateur wins a $15,000 Lund/Mercury walleye rig.  The tournament with daily 
weigh-ins at Graham’s Island State Park continues Thursday and Friday, with 
a total $250,000 purse.

    The Miller High Life Big Walleye was 9.08 pounds caught by pro James 
Randash, Rapid City, SD.  He will win at least $1,000.  Of the 164 sets of 
pro-am partners, 77 weighed PWT 6-fish limits.

    Samson fished with amateur Walt Erdman, West Fargo, ND, who leads that 
field.  In second are pro and amateur Perry Good, Eagan, Minn., and Dale 
Schmidt, Buffalo, Minn, with 31.87 pounds.  Good is a 3-time PWT winner. 
Another pro winner, John Peterson, Bemidji, Minn, is in third with 31.45 
pounds.  He fished with Brian Fitch, Fergus Falls, Minn.  Interestingly, 
Peterson, president of Northland Fishing Tackle, and Ted Takasaki, president 
of Lindy Little Joe tackle company, are sitting in third and fifth after the 
first day.  Takasaki weighed 29.84 pounds.  Devils Lake angler Cory Anderson 
weighed 30.01 pounds for fourth.
