Keith Kavajecz Holds Lead, but
Championship Pros Close Gap
Bismarck, North Dakota.....”It’s getting hot at the
top,” said Mercury
Championship leader Keith Kavajecz. The Kaukauna, Wis., In-Fisherman
Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) angler has held the lead for each
of the
first two days, but 10 pro anglers are within three pounds.
A past PWT winner, Kavajecz limited both days for
a total weight of 14.43
pounds. The 4-fish PWT daily limit (and state no-upgrading law)
forces
anglers to make decisions -- keep or release -- when they catch fish.
They
can then continue fishing for a fifth fish, but only four are allowed
on
stage.
Kavajecz is one of 51 pros who qualified by competing
at all six PWT
tournaments or either of the Dee Zee divisions. They are joined
by the
Mercury Top Amateur Tom Gonya, Toledo, Ohio. Gonya held the highest
position of any amateur in PWT Championship history, fourth after day
one.
He slipped to 37th place on day two.
Crowds of walleye fans cheered anglers as they were
towed inside the
Bismarck Civic Center where they hoisted their fish. In second
with 13.71
pounds is Scott Fairbairn, Hager City, Wis. Local favorite Dave
Kraft,
Bismarck, is in third with 13.59 pounds.
Anglers are competing for a share of $291,000 in
cash and prizes. The
winner receives $100,000 including a Lund boat, Mercury 200-hp, a tandem
axle Eagle trailer and MinnKota bow mount trolling motor, plus an
In-Fisherman model Leer pick-up truck cap. All anglers win at
least $1,000.
A marine and tackle Sport Show takes place in the
adjacent Exhibit Hall
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Many youth activities are planned,
including
free Silstar rods and reels to the first 1,000 youngsters who pick
up
coupons at the Exhibit Hall lobby starting at 2 p.m. The final
day
excitement begins with live entertainment and special video presentations
an
hour prior to the 4 p.m. weigh-in and stage festivities.
Anglers fish the Missouri River, and on day one,
162 of 163 walleyes were
released by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. On day
two, 150 of
156 went back into the river.
The Miller High Life big fish for day two is also
the largest of the
Championship at 4.18 pounds. Gary Gray, Oshkosh, Wis., landed
the big fish,
worth at least $1,000. It vaulted him into sixth position.
