Wisconsin Pro Keith Kavajecz
Leads 2002 Mercury Championship
Bismarck, North Dakota.....The In-Fisherman Professional
Walleye Trail
(PWT) anglers electrified walleye fans inside the Civic Center Thursday,
Sept. 12. Cheering their favorites as they crossed the stage,
the crowds
enjoyed the Mercury Championship festivities.
Fishing the Missouri River downstream from Bismarck,
the 52 qualifying pros
(best of the best after the 2002 PWT tournament circuit), found fish
by
trolling and jigging. Leading after day one with 8.01 pounds
is Kaukauna,
Wis. pro Keith Kavajecz. He caught his four fish PWT limit in
the right
order, 18 inches, 22 inches, 18 and 17 inches, and said, “What a great
day;
I wish every day on the water would be this good.” Miller
High Life big
fish of the day honors, 2.66 pounds, went to Kavajecz. It will
be worth at
least $1,000.
Tied for second are Scott Fairbairn, Hager City,
Wis., and Dave Kraft,
Bismarck, with 7.24 pounds. The top three pros are all past PWT
winners.
The Mercury Top Amateur, Tom Gonya, Toledo, Ohio,
weighed first and held
the lead with 6.64 pounds for half the weigh-in. He qualified
to fish
against the pros by placing first, fourth and ninth. During the
regular
circuit, amateurs fish with pros who supply the boat, gear and spots
to
fish. Gonya, currently in fourth place, holds the highest place
of any Top
Amateur in PWT Championship history.
The Mercury Championship runs through Saturday.
A Sport Show with the
latest in marine and fishing tackle is being held in the adjacent Exhibit
hall. All Civic Center and Sport Show activities are free for
fans and
families. The Sport Show runs 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10
a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday. Civic Center live entertainment starts at 3:15
p.m., with
anglers entering at 4 p.m.
A special youth fair hosted by NPAA members in the
Touchstone Energy booth
taught youngsters the fun of fishing. Plano tackle boxes and
1,000 Silstar
rods and reels will be given to young anglers on days two and three
(Friday
and Saturday). Youngsters collect Plano boxes and rod and reel
coupons
starting at 2 p.m., redeeming them after weigh-in.
The Championship television shows air Sundays on
TNN at noon, Sept. 22 and
Sept. 29.
