Roger Meyer and Joel Willette of Watertown, So. Dak., topped a full
field of 200 teams, winning the Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC)
/
Team Tournament held May 22-23 on Big Stone Lake at Ortonville, Minn. The
winners weighed nine fish totaling 32.15 lbs., a 3.57 lb. average, and
collected $13,000. They fished a three mile stretch of water, just
south of Shady Beach, located on the South Dakota side of the lake. According
to Willette, “The best bite both days was between seven and nine in the
morning. You could catch all kinds of smaller fish up to 15 inches,
but we concentrated on the bigger walleyes. We found that trolling
fast, about four miles per hour, triggered the larger fish.”Meyer added,
“We used several different crankbaits:
Thunder Stick Deep Jr’s.,
Shad Raps and Fat Raps. Yellow and chartreuse were the best colors.
I knew we had a chance to win it, and I was so excited today [Sun.], I
could hardly fish after noon.”
Second place and $7,500 went to Bob Bodin and Scott Mann of Red
Wing, Minn., with 25.90 lbs. They fished the Shady Beach and Mallard
Point areas, trolling #7 Shad Raps from 45 lb. test lead-core line with
25 to 30 foot 14 lb. test
FireLine leaders. Most of their fish came between 11 and 15 feet
of water.Third place with 25.45 lbs., worth $5,000, went to Lynn Hanisko
and Dave Klasell of Escanaba, Mich. They trolled the Mallard Point
area, long-lining #7 pearl-colored Shad Raps 110 feet behind the boat at
3.2 to 3.5 m.p.h.Despite ever changing weather conditions, especially the
final day of the tourney, which included wind gusts to 40 m.p.h., a total
of 1,026 walleyes weighing 1,939 lbs. were caught in the MWC catch and
release format. Only 13 teams failed to weigh a legal 15 inch fish. The
top 35 teams shared the $52,000 cash purse. An additional $6,050
was paid in big fish prizes. Jay Janny, Eagle, Wis., was awarded
a $1,000
rebate for his 9.12 lb. walleye. He and Kyle Morgan, Horicon, Wis.,
finished 20th with 19.95 lbs., netting $1,900.Jim Gregory of Big Stone
City, So. Dak., and partner Rick Hentges, Milbank, So. Dak., won the first
day Big Basket Award with 21.90 lbs. and received a Panther power auxiliary
motor lift.Second day Big Basket honors went to Jay and Bob Ross of Ortonville,
Minn., with 20.70 lbs., earning them a pair of Big Jon downriggers. The
catch of the tournament was made by Gregg Holman, Andover, Minn., and partner
Dick Lentz, Milbank, So. Dak., on the first day of the tournament.
They rescued a canoeist, who was not wearing a life jacket, and had fallen
from his craft. The MWC World Walleye Championship, featuring indoor weigh-ins,
will take place June 10-11-12 on Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc at Escanaba,
Mich. The top 50 point accumulating teams from the 1998 MWC season
will be competing for $73,000, with $20,000 going to the Champs. The next
regular circuit stop is the Ranger Boats MWC Team Tournament, July 17-18
on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at Oconto, Wis. The 200 team field is
already filled. For further information, contact the MWC at 414-761-0657
