Michigan Walleye Tour Houghton Lake Results
Beautiful Houghton Lake hosted the 2nd MWT qualifier May 30-31. Seventy
three teams fished the event for cash and tour points on Michigan's largest
inland lake. Anglers had to fine tune their techniques due to mayflies
hatching nightly and a slow daytime bite. Every team had a different method
of catching fish, but all were finesse fishing to be sure!Saturday brought
a cold front with a gentle north wind and 50 degree temps. Temperatures
did reach 75 midday as the wind calmed. The father and son team of Tom
and Joshua VanderWeide from Jenison, MI brought a limit of walleyes to
the scales weighing in 11.10 pounds. They were fishing the south
shore weed bed and the south east middle grounds using Walt's crawlers
on three hook spinners with Northland floats and trolling with the electric.
Seventeen year old Josh VanderWeide maintains all of their fish came
on the rod running right next to the weeds. They boated 20 fish with
15 keepers. Second place on day one was the husband and wife team of Don
and Sherri Howard of Davison, MI. They weighed 11.05 pounds casting
spinners and leeches in three foot of water slow rolling weed beds.
Sherri said they had 9 walleye in the boat on Saturdaywith several other
species being taken as well. The third place team on Saturday proved yet
another method successful on this 20,044 acre lake. The team of Rob
Kuberski and Tom Davis trolled crank baits over weeds in 10 foot of water
to weigh in 10.70 pounds. They ran shallow divers 20 foot in back of the
boards and ticked the top of the weeds. Rob states they boated 7
fish in three hours. Big fish on Saturday went to the team of Richardson/Peters
with a nice 4 pounder. Three local teams did very well on day one
as well. The real story of this tournament was Sunday's weather. A line
of devastating storms moved through the state at an astonishing 70 miles
an hour bringing with it 110 mile an hour straight line winds and unconfirmed
tornadoes. Mature trees 3 foot in diameter were uprooted, several
at the boat launch and one right next to the club's trailer. Several
tournament officials scrambled to vehicles and luckily no one was injured
and no teams had launched yet. An hour later and we could have had
amess. The tournament was canceled on Sunday due to debris in the
water more than any other factor. Tournament officials probably saved
some outdrives and possibly some injuries which was the right thing to
do. Day one leaders VanderWeide/VanderWeide took the first place
check with 11.10 pounds. Howard/Howard took second place and Kuberski/Davis,
third. Points leaders in the tour with two tournaments left is the
team Marple/Jones with 236 points. We would like to thank the people
of Houghton Lake and wish them well in their clean up efforts. They
were very gracious hosts. The next stop on the tour is the Grand
River June 27, 28.Contact Nels Larsen at(517)832-3626 or e-mail nlarsen@tm.net.The
