Christmas in July
By Bob Riege
Christmas
is almost here again and if we truly mean in the saying " the gift is in
the giving," then we should think of giving a gift that keeps on giving.
That special gift should be an entire family vacation to White Pine Resort
located on Two Inlet Lake near Park Rapids, MN.
This resort is an outstanding place to
bring the entire family. In fact, their brochure starts out; "Our
Family invites your family to join us at White Pine Resort. In light
of the recent world events our family, Greg, Mary, son Chad, and daughter-in-law
Casey, our grandson Cody, son Ryan and daughter Katie, would like to invite
you and yours to come and enjoy your next vacation here at our Family oriented
resort among the lakes and beautiful pines of Northern Minnesota, in a
safe and friendly environment as we start our 13th season here at White
Pine Resort."
Two Inlet Lake is approximately 2 miles long
and one mile wide and has excellent walleye, northern pike, large mouth
bass, crappie as well as an ample amount of sunnies and bluegills. Fishing
is not the only reason that people come to this resort. There is
a host of activities that any and all of the family can join. For
example, Saturday evening, "Get to Know Your Neighbor Campfire" this allows
everyone to get acquainted with one another over marshmallows and popcorn
over the open fire. Sunday evening Mary's " Ladies Only" sunset cruise
on the lake (sorry guys) allows the ladies to talk (and they really do)
without the hassles of the family. Monday evening there is Potluck
- the resort furnishes the hamburgers, hot dogs, and brats - you bring
your favorite dish to share. Potluck is followed by the ever famous
Norwegian Volleyball. Take along the video camera for some really
"funniest home videos". Tuesday is a favorite for kids of all ages,
it is water skiing and tubing day. Greg fires up his 18' Starcraft
and pulls anyone and everyone around the lake all day long, or until everyone
is worn out. Wednesday there is a kid morning for youngsters 6 and
up to participate in fun activities. Thursday evening is the Old
Fashion hayride for everyone through the adjacent State Forest and around
the lake. This is truly an old fashion hayride with the old tractor;
hay wagon; real hay and Ryan dressed as an old farmer with suspenders,
old jeans, plaid shirt and straw hat. This is a real treat for everyone,
especially the kids that have never experienced a hayride. Friday
morning is the Paul Bunyan breakfast cooked over an open fire. This
is a great, huge skillet filled with scrambled eggs, potatoes frying and
all the time Greg and Ryan are turning the contents of the skillet.
When it is completed everyone moves from the fire pit to the picnic area.
This event really rounds out the week for the family.
Also you can enjoy complimentary hot fresh homemade
donuts and beverages Monday through Saturday mornings. Also new to
the lodge for 2002 is an extended Old Fashion Ice Cream Shop with tasty
cones, malts and sundaes.
Now if you don't like to fish or you don't like
to take part in these family activities you might be interested in the
fact that White Pine also has basketball, tetherball, sand volleyball,
shuffleboard, horseshoes, fish pier, sand beach, canoes & paddleboats,
new hot tub house including an L shaped hot tub, kayaks, game room, playground,
lodge and of course the campfires.
If you still want to do more there is an abundance
of activities within 25 miles of the resort. For instance there are
paved bike trails, Lake Itasca State Forest (nine miles from the resort)
go carts, tennis courts, supper clubs, six golf courses, miniature golf,
horseback riding, nature walks and shopping.
In talking to a number of the guests at White
Pine this is what they had to say about the resort. Guy and Jennifer
Todd from Buffalo, MN said. "They had been coming to resort for a
number of years and it is a great place to come with family. Fishing
is super especially the panfish and bass." Kjel and Donna Peterson
of Coon Rapids said; "We just love to come here each year and reacquaint
ourselves with friends that have been coming up here the same week every
year. Our families grew up together for one week each summer and
it is nice to see the kids growing older and thinking of coming back the
same week." Without a doubt when asked about the owners of the lodge
everyone said that Greg and Mary Damlo were superior. They mentioned
that the resort is always kept up and new buildings have been added
and the place is a home rather than going to a resort. A number of
women commented to my wife that the dishwasher in every cabin, whirlpool
tubs, modern kitchens and the cozy wood burning fireplaces really helped
them decide that White Pine was the place to take their family.
I know that my family is going back to White
Pine. Fishing was great, but more importantly it was a way to spend
a few days creating some memories. The call of the loon; morning
sunrise on the lake, fishing with the kids, picnic lunches, a beautiful
sunset canoe outing, a toasty campfire in the evening with family and friends.
All this and more await you at White Pine Resort.
