River Walleye
By Eric Naig

Well here we go.  The rivers are open and a lot of anglers are heading out to the moving water to get in on some of the hottest walleye action of the season.  This is the time of year when you can¹t allow yourself to succumb to the high anxiety that occurs when you¹re fishing in a crowd.  People are going to cast over your line, motor right over your spot, and pull fish out from right under your boat.  That¹s spring river fishing if you want to hang with the crowd.

The two places where boats congregate are at the base of a dam, and where creeks and smaller rivers feed in.  These can be productive locations so they are angler magnets and get pretty crowded.

I might stop off at a community spot to say hi to my old friends that rendeveous there each year, but I like to have my fish all to myself, so I find less popular locations.

Walleyes will be moving up and down the river as they spawn, but they don¹t all move at once.  Some are early travellers and some are late migrators.  With this in mind you can realize that anywhere there is a current break near the main channel it is potentially a good spot for walleyes.  On the downstream side of an island, or a wing dam, or any inside turn, these can all be great spots while the fish are migrating.

One day I was fishing some rip-rap that was well into the river due to the high water.  A boat slid up close to me as they were heading upstream to the dam.  The passenger asked me if I was fishing for catfish.  I told him walleyes.  He laughed and said all those fish were up at the dam.  Five minutes after they were out of sight I set the hook on another big fish; a nine-pound walleye.

So sharpen up your jigs and load up on minnows.  The rivers are open, the walleyes are biting, the weather is getting real nice, and the fishing season up north is beginning.   It¹s about time.
