Rice Lake, Wis. (BARRON COUNTY) -- as of October 1, 2007:

In the Rice Lake, Wisconsin area, the walleye and northern (44
incher just caught) bite is very strong, with solid bass action, along with
consistently improving musky and crappie hits. Goose hunting is very good,
with a couple of nice bucks taken by bow deer hunters.

It's the fall season and both the fishing and hunting in the Rice Lake area
is very good and continuously improving. Now is the time to get up here for
this annual smorgasbord of sporting activities.

The walleye action in the Rice Lake area is exceptional. Lots of fish being
caught, albeit good numbers of them are not legal sized (Red Cedar Lake is
an example). It's still a lot of fun. Start fishing in 10 to 15 feet of
water over hardbottom areas or off of humps. Troll or jig - -a crawler
harness for trolling (do it very slowly), and a crawler or minnow when
jigging. It's a horse-a-piece as far as which method produces the best.
The walleye are just now starting to move shallower throughout the day (it's
an all day bite for the walleye), as they chase minnows. Best suggestion is
start fishing in the 15 foot depth range and move slowly shallower towards
the weeds.

Northern and musky are in the same areas in the Rice Lake area, with the
northern torching most anything thrown at them. Fish off the weeds in 4 to
12 feet, using a slightly downsized musky bait of most any type, like a
bucktail. Good action, good numbers and some great sized northern being
caught (one just came in that measured 44 inches that's a real lunker!).

The musky are in the same area as the northern. Use a bucktail, plastic or
Bull Dawg. There's ever improving action as the water cools. Suckers are
just now coming in to bait shops, and musky hunters are starting to try
them. Stay tuned. The musky are maxing out right now in the mid 40 inch
range, but there are also some real trophies in the Rice Lake area which
will start chomping soon. Just a note to help preserve the Rice Lake area's
wonderful musky population: Please release everything after a photo or two
(Frank Zumph).

Bass continue to bite nicely in the Rice Lake area. The smallies are
locating in the same areas as the walleye - - 10 to 15 feet off of humps.
Plastics, live bait like a small sucker minnow, and Berkley Gulp! leeches
will all produce. The largemouth are in the "slop" - -heavy weeds, stumps,
and cover in 4 to even 12 feet of water. Use a plastic worm, any type of
plastic "creature" (frog, rat etc.) run off the tops of the weeds and then
stopped-and-dropped at any weed opening, or a tube jig. Good action.

Crappie action in the Rice Lake area is picking up, as the crappie start to
school more tightly. Fish off of structure, like cribs or drop offs in 8 to
12 feet of water. The crappie will usually suspend about 4 to 5 feet down,
but that's not a "gimme." Best technique is to start deep and work
shallower, remembering that crappie only bite "up," never "down." Tubes are
working, along with small minnows, and some anglers are having great success
slowly trolling or drifting with a Beetle Spin, until a school is located,
and then stopping and working the area.

Fall hunting in the Rice Lake area is real fine. The regular goose hunting
season is producing well, with the geese coming in in large numbers as
farmers "chop" their corn. Grouse numbers are up, and that's good, but with
the leaves not yet down, hunters are seeing plenty of birds, but the grouse
are difficult to get at the moment. Bow deer hunters have taken a couple of
nice bucks, but many hunters are waiting for the rut so that they stand a
better chance of bagging a trophy.

Brilliance interview with Frank Zumpf of Rainbow Home Center in Rice Lake
