| Fishing report from Walleyes Inc for Eagle River Wisconsin last update
January 29, 2012 |
Very good to excellent action for crappies, bluegills and perch,
with the northern bite good, and walleye fair, all in the Eagle River,
Wisconsin area.
Ice is 12 inches plus in the Eagle River area. There's about a foot of snow
on the ice, and areas of slush, which makes foot travel difficult. Use an
ATV or snowmobile. There are mixed opinions from guides about using motor
vehicles. The ice is still too "iffy" according to some, to use motor
vehicles. Caution is a definite "must do" - -and if there is any even
slight question ,do not take any chances which will compromise your safety.
Panfish crappies, bluegills and perch - -are putting on a good to
excellent bite in the Eagle River area. The panfish have moved deeper.
Fish 15-30 of water. The perch will be tight to bottom, with the crappies
and bluegills suspending up and down the water column. Start at the bottom
and work your way up. Use a small jig tipped with a waxie or spike, or a
small crappie minnows on a bare hook.
Northern action is good in the Eagle River area. Fish 10 feet of water or
less in and around the weeds, with the weed edges best. Use a medium shiner
under a tip up, setting the minnow a foot above the weeds. A sucker minnow
will also work, but shiners are best.
The walleye bite in the Eagle River area is fair. Fish 15 feet of water or
less outside weed edges. Use a small shiner on a tip up, or jig with a
small spoon tipped with a minnow head.
Best action comes when you start fishing about an hour before sunset.

*EAGLE RIVER, WISCONSIN, Snowmobile Capital of the World.®
All 100 miles of trails are OPEN in the immediate Eagle River area, and full
grooming has resumed on a daily basis. Lots of new snow, with great snow
cover on the trails. Trails are smooth and flat, and can now be classified
as being in good to very good riding condition. We are expecting more snow
which will make the trails even that much better. There is ice under the
snow, so slow down, especially in the corners. The lake trails, Catfish Lake
Loop and Eagle Lake Trail are open. Stay by the reflective orange barrels
to be safe. High winds have caused some drifting on the lake trails. Do
not go on any lake that is not marked with a trail. Lots of riders are
enjoying themselves in Eagle River- -you should be up here doing so, too.
Here is some important and detailed information about the trails, safety and
snowmobile opportunities in the Eagle River area:
The 100 miles of snowmobile trails groomed and maintained by the Sno-Eagles
snowmobile club in the Eagle River area and are continually inspected.
As you ride you will see six inch brown signs along the trail and at
intersections. Keep an eye on these. If you have a problem call 911 and
give them the three digit number. The sheriff's department can pin point
where you are. The sheriff's department can't always find you by your cell
phone signal. Many times they have to work off the ping from the tower,
which could take more time.
If you are riding in this cold weather make sure that all skin is covered.
It doesn't take much to get frost bite. Layers of clothing work the best.
Stop often and make sure you keep your sled full of gas.
Trail 13 south has been re-routed due to a landowner closing a section of
the original trail. At the intersection of Trail 13 south and Trail 70 west
behind the Dairy Queen in town, Trail 13 will now head west on the 70 west
trail. It will continue west until it intersects with what is now Trail 7
south, heading south and then connecting to the Sugar Camp trail system.
The trail section that heads south behind the Dairy Queen is now Trail 10.
Trail 10 will use the "grade" to Willow Road as the trail always has. At
Willow Road, Trail 10 heads east (left turn) which also takes you to the
Catfish Lake loop. Trail 13 heading through Eagle River and parts north
remain the same.
Sno-Eagles Inc. who groom and maintain the trails described strongly
recommends that riders pick up a new 2012 Snow-Eagles trail map.
The "Proud Groomers of the Snowmobile Capital of the World®", the
Sno-Eagles, Inc." continue to groom the trails. "It's a great year to be a
sledder," says the website (www.sno-eagles.org)
There are many pristine X-C ski and snowshoe trails in the Eagle River area.
The trails are among the best in the Midwest. The trails are groomed for
both skating and classic-style-cross-country skiing. Eagle River area
snowshoers will find trekking opportunities on both trails and miles upon
miles of logging roads. Groomed trails are in generally good to very good
condition. There is a very good snow cover, but some thinner snow cover is
reported under the tree cover, as well as in exposed areas. Trail users
should be watchful of icy conditions developing in freeze/thaw and sun
exposed areas. Check with the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce for
up-to-the-minute information on trail conditions. Detailed contact
information for the Eagle River Chamber is available at the end of this
report.
