Berkley TrileneLindy Little Joe MWC WALLEYE TOURNEY
MAY 22-23 – BIG STONE LAKE, ORTONVILLE, MINN.

ORTONVILLE, MINN. --  The father/son team, Jim and Bob Schommer of Fond du Lac, Wis., collected their first Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC) win at Big Stone Lake in Ortonville, Minn. last year by weighing a ten fish MWC limit totaling 39.98 lbs.  The duo is looking to repeat their success May 22-23 at the Berkley TrileneLindy Little Joe Team tournament.
They’ll face stiff competition from the remaining 199 teams, which include the reigning MWC Team of the Year, Tom and Mark Keenan of Appleton WisconsinWisconsin brothers Tom and Mark Keenan from Hatley and Appleton, Wis.  At last year’s Big Stone tourney, the Schommers fished rocky mid-lake points with slip bobber rigs tipped with leeches.  Jim said they caught more than 40 walleyes over 21 inches the first tourney day, but the bite slowed on day two, with the team catching their final fish just before weigh-in to secure the victory.
Big Stone Lake (headwaters of the Minnesota River) is located in west central Minnesota and borders Milbank, So. Dak.  Though somewhat shallow, having a maximum depth of 16 feet, the lake has one of the highest walleye populations per acre in the state.  Its 26 mile length encompasses nearly 13,000 surface acres and contains more than 30 fish species.  According to tournament director Sonja Pinkert, “We’ve had a normal winter and spring, so the walleyes should be chomping by tournament time.”
A variety of presentations will catch Big Stone’s walleyes.  The Keenans finished third last year with 28.91 lbs.  They trolled perch-colored crankbaits in the lake’s deeper sections.
Brent Hasslen (Ortonville, Minn.) and Ritchie Seidell (Big Stone City, So. Dak.) placed second with 29.18 lbs.  They fished the north end of Big Stone, casting firetiger-colored crankbaits along the shoreline in two feet of water.
Tournament teams will be competing for $52,000 in prize money, with $13,000 going to the winners.  Weigh-ins will take place in Ortonville’s Lakeside Park beginning at 3:00 p.m. May 22nd and 2:30 p.m. May 23rd.  The public is invited to attend—admission is free.  All MWC tournaments are catch and release.
The tournament field of 200 teams is already filled.  For further information, contact Sonja Pinkert, Big Stone Lake Area Chamber, 41 N.W. 2nd St., Ortonville, Minn. 56278, tel. 320-839-3284 or 800-568-5722, or the MWC at 3137 W. Hilltop Ln., Franklin, Wis. 53132, tel. 414-761-0657.
The MWC is a nonprofit corporation which conducts a series of professionally run fishing tournaments at which family participation and conservation of fishery resources are stressed.  To date the MWC Conservation Fund, the only fund of its kind in professional fishing, has contributed more than $194,000 to fisheries programs in states where MWC tournaments are held.  Contributions to Big Stone Lake fishery projects have topped the $20,000 mark.

Roger Meyer and Joel Willette of Watertown, So. Dak., topped a full field of 200 teams, winning the Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC) Berkley Trilene /Lindy Little Joe  Team Tournament held May 22-23 on Big Stone Lake at Ortonville, Minn. The winners weighed nine fish totaling 32.15 lbs., a 3.57 lb. average, and collected $13,000.  They fished a three mile stretch of water, just south of Shady Beach, located on the South Dakota side of the lake. According to Willette, “The best bite both days was between seven and nine in the morning.  You could catch all kinds of smaller fish up to 15 inches, but we concentrated on the bigger walleyes.  We found that trolling fast, about four miles per hour, triggered the larger fish.”Meyer added, “We used several different crankbaits: Storm Fishing Lures Thunder Stick Deep Jr’s., Rapala the lures of choice Shad Raps and Fat Raps.  Yellow and chartreuse were the best colors.  I knew we had a chance to win it, and I was so excited today [Sun.], I could hardly fish after noon.”
Second place and $7,500 went to Bob Bodin and Scott Mann of Red Wing, Minn., with 25.90 lbs.  They fished the Shady Beach and Mallard Point areas, trolling #7 Shad Raps from 45 lb. test lead-core line with 25 to 30 foot 14 lb. test Berkley Trilene FireLine leaders.  Most of their fish came between 11 and 15 feet of water.Third place with 25.45 lbs., worth $5,000, went to Lynn Hanisko and Dave Klasell of Escanaba, Mich.  They trolled the Mallard Point area, long-lining #7 pearl-colored Shad Raps 110 feet behind the boat at 3.2 to 3.5 m.p.h.Despite ever changing weather conditions, especially the final day of the tourney, which included wind gusts to 40 m.p.h., a total of 1,026 walleyes weighing 1,939 lbs. were caught in the MWC catch and release format.  Only 13 teams failed to weigh a legal 15 inch fish. The top 35 teams shared the $52,000 cash purse.  An additional $6,050 was paid in big fish prizes.  Jay Janny, Eagle, Wis., was awarded a $1,000 Mercury Outboards rebate for his 9.12 lb. walleye.  He and Kyle Morgan, Horicon, Wis., finished 20th with 19.95 lbs., netting $1,900.Jim Gregory of Big Stone City, So. Dak., and partner Rick Hentges, Milbank, So. Dak., won the first day Big Basket Award with 21.90 lbs. and received a Panther power auxiliary motor lift.Second day Big Basket honors went to Jay and Bob Ross of Ortonville, Minn., with 20.70 lbs., earning them a pair of Big Jon downriggers. The catch of the tournament was made by Gregg Holman, Andover, Minn., and partner Dick Lentz, Milbank, So. Dak., on the first day of the tournament.  They rescued a canoeist, who was not wearing a life jacket, and had fallen from his craft. The MWC World Walleye Championship, featuring indoor weigh-ins, will take place June 10-11-12 on Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc at Escanaba, Mich.  The top 50 point accumulating teams from the 1998 MWC season will be competing for $73,000, with $20,000 going to the Champs. The next regular circuit stop is the Ranger Boats MWC Team Tournament, July 17-18 on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at Oconto, Wis.  The 200 team field is already filled.  For further information, contact the MWC at 414-761-0657 or the Oconto Chamber of Commerce, 920-834-2255. The MWC is a nonprofit corporation which conducts a series of professionally run fishing tournaments at which family participation and conservation of fishery resources are stressed.  To date the MWC Conservation fund, the only fund of its kind in professional fishing, has contributed more than $196,000 to fisheries programs in states where MWC tournaments are held.  MWC sponsors are Berkley Trilene, Lindy Little Joe, Mercury Outboards, MotorGuide, North American Fishing Club/North American Fisherman, Quantum and Ranger Boats.
