Pre tournament tips and Tactics

Important Information
May 15, 1998

Before discussing the activities and plans at Leech Lake, you should all know that the success of the PWT is based on the actions of each participant. For instance, at Lake Erie, when a pro's boat started taking on water (the plumbing on the transom let go), another pro answred his marine radio call lor help, and rendered assistance and stood by until the towing service arrived on the scene.
Thank Ron Creswell when you see him at Leech for helping Greg Engelhart. Also, Gary Parsons took Paul Meleen's fish to the weigh-in on the final day, and Rick LaCourse ran to the launch alongside Tommy Skarlis, whose engine was having "water in the gas" problems.

This points up a very important safety consideration. Marine band radios must be on at all times, with antenna up, and the quality of your transmissions must be loud and clear. These may save a life, and for that reason, must be in working order when you depart each morning. Apelco has loaner base units which can be plugged into your antenna cord. Handhelds do not have the range or power to be left on all day. Now, onto the tournament. Results are listed on the lake ERIE report, and on the pro side, Gary Gray scored his first PWT victory. Amateur Charlie Christofferson was mighty happy with his $12,500 win. Note the Big Fish Award results. Most were taken by amateurs, who in turn split with their pros. The largest fish was caught by Jim Klick, who drew one of only two amateurs not in the Big Fish pot. Needless to say, Jim was not obligated to split with his amateur.Amateur's read the enclosed brochure. It explains and answers most questions you might have. However, if you need additional information or clarification, please call PWT headquarters.
The PWT Advisory Council met at Lake Erie, and discussed many matters. At Leech, we will implement one suggestion. After the rules meeting and pairings, all amateurs and pros should wait outside irntii the day two and three partners meet and greet each other. This way, both pros and amateurs will know their partners. Amateurs, ask your day one partner to help you find your other pro's.
And, Arlen Wendt, the amateur representative on the Advisory Council wiil be implementing a program lo help amateurs find rides to tournaments with other amateurs or pros. This will save money for amateurs and lead to new friendships. Arlen will have this on the Walleyes INC, however, until that occurs, you may call him at 612-784-6551 (home), or work at 612-835-7080, ext. 18. or e-mail at pwtinfo@aol.com or walleyeinc@aol.com or randyt9295@aol.com

Other Advisory Council reps are: Minnesota: Ron Anlauf  N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Washington: Dave Kraft Colorado, Nebraska, lowa: Tom Bruno Michigan: Kim 'Chief" Papineau Wisconsin: Daryl Christensen lllinois and states east: Ted Takasaki NPAA tournament liaison: Gary Parsons
The Advisory Council at Leech will be held under the LubriMatic Tent on Monday, June 1, the second competition day at 7 p.m. Following this meeting, an Amateur Night will be held with representatives from the tackle and marine industries discussing their businesses and sponsorship and team programs.
The schedule is enclosed. Those fishing the tournament have also received information from thc i~.ech l ake (:hamber of Commerce. The events like the softball game, the Shoot-Out and food (realfy good), the Fish Fry prior to the rules meeting and the community picnic and pig roast are fun and all contestants and their families are invited to attend. Wear your "colors" and have fun in Walker.
The closed period starts Friday, May 22 and runs through Monday, May 25. Prior to the first practice day on Tuesday, May 26, and before launching your boats on Leech, they must be inspected. This is a state requirement. Boat inspection times:
Monday, May 25, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Walker City Park Tuesday, May 26, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Pros register Tuesday night at the tent from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pros, refer to PWT rule X. E. if you have any questions. Amateurs may register Tuesday night also, or at the designated times on the schedule.
Tournament boundaries for Leech will be to Highway 8 on the east; Kabekona River up to the Highway 38 bridge; Kabekona Bay and Benedict Lake are open; Shingobee, Pumphouse and Miller Bays are open; the remainder of Leech is open.
Respect the no-wake zones under all bridges and from Agency Bay to Trading Post Bay.

Press Release Day 2
Pros Start to Pattern Leech Lake Wa l l e y e s
Walker, MN . . The Pinnacle/ Central Pro-Am on Leech Lake was a dilemma for some while others landed limits. Daily cold fronts during the practice period forced anglers to scramble in all corners of Minnesota’s third largest lake.
Leading after the first day are pro Bill Leonard, Estherville, Iowa, and his amateur partner Bryon Sticker, Brainerd, MN, with 14.31 pounds. Their 6-fish limit came on spinners and crawlers in 8 to 10 feet. In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) officials cancelled the Sunday competition due to 35 mph NW winds and 5 to 7 foot swells on the main lake. After a clear first day of competition Monday, showers and thunderstorms with hail greeted the anglers and crowds at Walker City Park during weigh-in. All anglers made it safely back. The final day weigh-in will take place Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. with a $203,000 awards ceremony immediately following.
Most anglers fished either spinners and crawlers shallow, like the leaders, while others fished spinners and crawlers at the 32 to 39 foot transition zone (hard to soft bottom). The other key pattern proved to be Lindy rigs with leeches or crawlers. Common zones were 8 to 15 feet and 18 to 22 feet.
The second place pro/am partnership was Ron Seelhoff, Lewellen, NE, and Ray LeGatt, Rice, MN, with 13.87 pounds. The third place duo of pro David A. Anderson, Amery, WI and amateur Tom Miller, Sherburn, MN weighed 12.02 pounds.
A total of 17 limits came to the scales. The six Walleye Angler big fish of the day paid $800 to $1,900. The largest walleye was landed by pro Greg Horoky, Harrow, Ontario. It weighed 7.53 pounds. Winning $1,200 for a second place 6.35-pound walleye was pro Bruce DeShano, Port Austin, MI. Third paid $1,100 to pro Pete Harsh, Sauk Centre, MN for a 5.98-pounder. The fourth place big fish was worth $1,000 to pro Seelhoff, 5.92 pounds. Fifth and $900 richer was pro Leonard, 5.55 pounds. And sixth ($800) was split between pro Dave Randash, Dilworth, MN, amateur Bruce Nelson, Erskine, MN, and amateur Joe Myszkewicz, Burlington, WI.
The largest daily amateur weight earned Stricker a Flambeau TS2000 tackle storage system.

P W T Wi n n e r
Faces ‘Harsh’ Conditions to Win $51,100

Walker, MN . .
Despite a shortened tournament due to high winds, pro Pete Harsh, Sauk Centre, MN caught seven walleyes on the two competition days and won $50,000. He topped the full field of pro walleye anglers fishing the The Pinnacle/ Central Pro-Am on Leech Lake, with 22.60 pounds.

The crowd ducked under large tents at Walker City Park to avoid rain showers during both weigh-in ceremonies. In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) officials cancelled the original first day, while competitors fished two days of a traditional “walleye chop” pushed by 10 to 20 mph NW winds.
They felt temperatures drop from 80 degrees a few days before the tournament to 43 degrees Tuesday morning.
The weather forced the anglers to adapt by going to deeper fish-holding areas or attempting to finesse walleyes with Lindy and Roach rigs. Some anglers power-trolled spinners and crawlers at specific breaklines.
Harsh fished 20 to 29 feet and the closest competitor fished more than a mile away. He found a series of “hard bumps” and landed two fish on bottom bouncers with #3 green and chartreuse spinners and crawlers the first day. On Tuesday, after the severe cold front, he slowed down with live bait Lindy rigs and crawlers. “They were picking it up very lightly; hooks popped out in the net,” he said of his five fish.
He fished the PWT in 1992, 1993 and 1994, collecting two top 10 place finishes. “He’s back on the tour big-time now, with a first at Leech and a fourth place at Lake Erie a few weeks ago,” said Jim Kalkofen, PWT executive director. Harsh moved into the PWT Angler of the Year lead.
The second place pro, David A. Andersen, Amery, WI, won $15,000 with a total catch of 19.37 pounds. Third place paid $10,000 to pro Ron Seelhoff, Lewellen, NE who weighed 18.82 pounds. The winning amateur, Ray Legatt, Rice, MN, fished with pros Seelhoff and Steve Bissett, Elk River, MN to win $12,500. The total purse was $203,000, with the top 23 contestants “in the money.”
A special award went to Lois Templin, retiring Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce executive director as the PWT “Key Award” winner. She organized 200 volunteers and a variety of community activities that tied the anglers closely to their hosts.
Also in the winner’s bracket was the pro who advanced the most places to earn the $1,000 Coleman Cool Under Pressure award. Joe Lundquist, Osseo, MN moved 71 places. The Coleman amateur winner ($500) went to Scott Weiskopf, Greenfield, WI for advancing 72 places.
The Storm Heavyweight $500 prize for the largest one-day catch of 14.31 pounds went to pro Bill Leonard, Estherville, IA, who was the first day leader. Amateur Bryon Stricker, Brainerd, MN, won $300 as his partner. The T-H Marine live release award, $500 went to Andersen for releasing all 12 of his walleyes.
The Walleye Angler Big Fish of the tournament, 7.61 pounds, was worth $2,400 for amateur Lorrie Schaefer, Minot, ND. Amateur David Wallace, Binford, ND scored $1,200 for a 6.85-pounder on Tuesday. The third place big fish paid $1,100 to pro Bob Hanson, Pequot Lakes, MN for a 6.75-pounder.
