Pro Norb Wallock Wins Realtree
2002 Sportsman of the Year Award
Bismarck, North Dakota....Norb Wallock, waging a
courageous battle with
cancer, was unanimously voted the 2002 Realtree Sportsman of the Year.
The
balloting was conducted by the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail
(PWT)
contestants in Bismarck for the Mercury Championship.
Wallock, 52, from Conover, Wis., has been extremely
successful in the
walleye fishing game. His top performances occurred over the
past two
years. In 2000, he recorded a PWT victory, besting all contenders
on
Michigan’s Saginaw Bay for a $50,500 win. That year he also posted
a fourth
on Lake Erie. In 2001, he netted checks in all but one tournament,
including a third on Mille Lacs in Minnesota, and a seventh on North
Dakota’s Lake Sakakawea. He has 10 top 10 finishes and 24 “money”
finishes.
Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with cancer of
the esophagus. Despite
attempting to compete early, he was forced to withdraw after the first
tournament. A steady regimen of “chemo” and doctoring took
him out of
competition. Currently, he is in Wausau Hospital in Wisconsin
where the
Realtree trophy, the $500 award and a Championship brochure signed
by all
competitors was delivered. When reached with news of the honor,
Wallock’s
wife Julie said, “Norb is sleeping now, but we can’t believe the support
his
PWT friends demonstrate every day. This will make Norb’s day
and give him
strength to keep fighting.”
The 52 top qualifiers from the 2002 PWT season are
fishing in the Mercury
Championship. The winner will rake in $100,000 of a total $291,000
purse.
Competition on the Missouri River Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept.
12-14, will be followed with stage festivities in the Bismarck Civic
Center.
Fans will also enjoy a fishing tackle and marine Sport Show
in the
adjacent Exhibit Hall. All activities are free to the public.
