Fishing report by Greg Adams
"Fishing Report"
11 June 1998
Lake Oahe
Walleye - While Walleye fishing is still good by most measures we did
have a tremendous storm on Monday, 8 June. That rain storm with a
record 2.3 inches of rain for the Pierre area was accompanied with 5 days
of below normal temperatures. This weather change definitely had
an effect on the fishing. While we are still able to produce limits
of good eating sized fish (15 to 17 inches) and the occassional larger
fish (4 pounds and greater) we have dropped back from the 50 to 60 Walleye
per day we had been catching.
The fish seem to be coming from a bit deeper water (20 to 30 feet) but
still on minnows with either a jig or lindy (bottom boucers as well) rig
with minnow. Some fish have also started coming in on leeches and
the lindy rig.
I visited with Ray Pitts, a Pro-Guide that works both here and in the
Mobridge, SD area, and he indicated that many small fish are being caught
up there but few meet the state minimum 14 inch size limitation.
I also visited with Brad Garrett, Pro-Guide from here in, Sully County,
and while he hadn't been out for a couple of days his reports were also
that the bite had slowed a bit and that when fishing he had been taking
fish from a bit deeper water (20 feet) still with jig and minnow.
I am sure the bite will be back on with a fury over the week end as
the fish are quite hungry and forage is really limited. Northern
I have caught have had smaller Walleye in them. One of the guides
mentioned to me he was cleaning a 3 pound Walleye and found a 10 inch Walleye
in the gullet. With the shortage of forage I am sure last years year
class of Walleye will become more of a forage fish than they have been
in the past. I have really been stressing the positive effects on
catch and release on our larger (24 inches and greater) Walleye to assist
in keeping our great fishery just that -- GREAT!
Just prior to the cold snap and heavy winds and rains I had the opportunity
to fish with Jeff Jordan and Roger Hubert, of Erie, CO. This is the
second year I had the pleasure of fishing with Roger and Jeff and we had
three great days of fishing.
The above fish were taken in the Fairbanks Creek area and were caught
using both jigs tipped with minnow's and bottom bouncer's with a 5 foot
leader with just a bead and a snelled hook and minnow. The largest
fish came in at just about 4 pounds and was the large fish of the trip
for Roger so we brought it in for cleaning
Important Information
We are anxiously awaiting the journey to Lake Oahe, because the fish
stories coming from the reservoir are nothing short of spectacular.
Mike McClelland predicts the winner will set a new record eclipsing Mark
Brumbaughs 100 pound mark of a few years ago.
At Oahe the PWT headquarters will be situated at Lighthouse Pointe.
This facility was formally known as Oahe lodge. It is west of Pierre and
easy to find. contestants will launch at this and other local ramps.
We encourage all contestants to car pool to conserve the limited parking
spaces at the ramps. This will be critical during the tournament
days.
Several congratulations are in order. First congratulation to
Walleyes INC touring pro
Gary Engberg.
He missed Leech Lake due to surgery, but the doctors are convinced they
found all the cancer in his groin. He is already feeling better,
but has 20 radiation treatments coming up we all wish Gary a speedy recovery.
After the Leech Lake tournament, another veteran moved into the winners
circle. Pete harsh, after finishing the PWT tour in 92, 93 and 94
with two top 10 finishes already has a first at Leech this year following
a fine fourth place finish at Lake Erie. He is leading the Angler
of the year race.
Walleyes INC touring pro Mark
Martin by cashing a check at Leech Lake became the 10th pro to crack
the $100,000 barrier in winnings on the PWT. And
Ron Seelhoff with a $10,000 payday at Leech moved fifth in the all
time PWT winnings.
On the amateur side , anglers from seven states are represented in the
Mariner Top Amateur race with Charlie Christofferson leading the 69 amateurs
fishing all four qualifiers. At the last two tournaments, the amateur
nights have been well attended and very informative. At Lake Oahe,
the subject at the amateur night will be tackle, the tackle industry and
sponsorship with Ron Smart from Storm
Lures, John Peterson from
Northland Tackle and Walleyes INC Tony
Puccio of Bait rigs tackles being the speakers. All amateurs
and pro's are invited to attend.
At lake Oahe a couple of reminders
-
all tournament boats must be registered with numbers displayed
-
Each angler may posses 12 dozen baitfish, if more are to be possessed or
brought or shipped into the state, the individual must obtain a retail
or wholesale bait license
-
The only"red tail" chubs legal in the state are Hybopsis biguttata minnows
according to the DNR. If not they are illegal
-
Tournament boundaries are from the dam to the Highway 212 bridge.
-
Pros remember to the photo opportunities check the schedule and also the
times and dates of registration. Be early so the next scheduled NPAA
can begin on time
If amateurs are seeking rides to Oahe or future tournaments, or pros are
lookinng for amateurs to accompany them, Contact Walleyes INC Arlen Wendt
the PWT advisory council amateur representative at 612-784-6551 in the
evenings or 612-835-7080 during the day . It will also be posted
on the Walleyes INC website at www.walleyesinc.com
or e-mail Arlen at pwtinfo@aol.com

Press Release Day 1
June 2, 1998
For Immediate Release
Shallow to Deep; Jigs to Rigs; PWT Anglers do it all
Pierre, SD . . In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) anglers
told the Lighthouse Pointe crowd that walleyes were everywhere. The 240
contestants fished Lake Oahe shallow to deep, with walleyes coming from
10 to 60 feet deep.
The PowerBait/LubriMatic Midwest Pro-Am pro leader with 27.73 pounds
is 2-time former PWT Angler of the Year Gary Parsons, Chilton, WI. He fished
with amateur Gary Randall, Webster City, IA. A total of 87 pro-am partnerships
caught PWT 6-fish limits.
The PWT format pairs amateurs with pros, who provide the boat, tackle,
gear and make the where-to-go decisions. The second, place pro-am weight
was 24.84 pounds, caught by pro Jack Wills, Jr, Warren, PA and amateur
Rodger Pape, East Grand Forks, ND. In third are pro Perry Good, Eagan,
MN, and amateur Phil Schultz, Lake Zurich, IL, with 22.65 pounds. The leaders
are closely pursued by 20 pros and amateurs who are within 10 pounds.
Amateurs draw new pro partners for days two and three, Thursday and
Friday. The weigh-in takes place west of Pierre at Lighthouse Pointe Resort
at 3 p.m. daily. The $203,000 awards ceremony follows Friday’s weigh-in.
Many anglers Lindy and Roach rigged big chubs, while others bottom-bounced
crawlers and minnows. Some jigged with live bait, while trollers combed
the depths with crankbaits.
The largest walleye, 8.26 pounds, won $1,850 for pro Jim Klick, White
Bear Lake, MN as the Walleye Angler prize winner. In second was pro Wills
with a 7.75-pounder for $1,200. Third paid $800 to pro Pete Parkinson,
Ankeny, IA. It weighed 7.61 pounds. The fourth largest walleye, 7.51 pounds,
was worth $725 for pro Harry Stiles, Pierre, SD.
Randall won a Flambeau TS2000 tackle system for the heaviest weight
registered by an amateur.

Weather- After the tension of a tornado warning at the rules and partner
pairing meeting. The weather was relatively calm the next morning.
Pro Partner- Dan DeJaeghere
Boat - Warrior
Flight Number 2 - Due Back at 4:00 p.m.
Dan and I started the day trolling Rapala Shad Raps, Reef Runner
Deep Divers, and lead core line. The lures were set at different depths.
They were then separated from the boat using Off-Shore Planer Boards. As
we were trolling , one of the planer boards slide back. I grabbed the rod,
gently
and steadily I started to wind up the line. There was heavy weight,
but very little movement on the other end. As the fish came close to the
boat, we noticed that a 13-15 pound northern pike was on the end of the
line. With net in hand, Dan reached for the fish to retrieve the lure. The
pike opened it mouth and out came a 1# walleye. The tension placed
on the line by the rod forced the walleye to pop out of the water and land
in the bottom of the Warrior boat. The small walleye was released and quickly
swam away.
Midday, we changed our presentation to bottom-bouncers and live-bait
rigs. The Eagle Claw Featherlite hooks were effective as we quickly boated
a limit of Walleyes. The live-bait presentation using minnows was
very effective. We were hot for a while, having two doubles and several
fish
over the 15" tournament limit. Dan, a new resident of Pierre, South
Dakota, is a factory rep for Warrior boat. We had a great day fishing,
this is Dan's Rookie year as a Pro.
All the other pro's had better watch out.

Walleye Pro Gary Parsons maintains PWT Lead
Pierre South Dakota
Wisconsin pro angler Gary Parsons leads the Powerbait/Lubrimatic Midwest
Pro-Am after two days. The Chilton pro weighted a six fish limit
of 23.29 pounds for a total of 51.02 lbs. after two days on south Dakotas
Lake Oahe
Parsons won PWT Angler of the Year honors back to back in 1993 and
1994. He is also third on the PWT all time money list. “ It
was tougher today, especially after my favorite spot was barren this morning,”
Parsons said. Moving into second place with 47.03 lbs. is pro and
LAKE Oahe guide Dave Spaid, of Pierre SD. Another Lake Oahe guide
Harry Stiles of Pierre moved into third place with 45.70 lbs.
A total of 31 pro anglers are within 20 pounds of the leader as the
third day will determine the ultimate winner. After Fridays weight
in ceremonies at Lighthouse Pointe Resort west of Pierre anglers will split
$203,000.00 in cash and merchandise.
The leading amateur is Dick Hamilton, Rapid City SD after fishing with
pro’s John Peterson, Bemidji MN, and Harry Stiles. Amateurs fish
with a different pro each day. Mike Gofron of Antioch IL weighted
the largest catch of the tournament 32.04 lbs. His amateur partner
Richard Ness, Ruthton MN won a flambeau TS2000 tackle system for the catch.
Jack Wills Jr of Warren PA, was in second place yesterday but misjudged
his return time and arrived at the timekeeper two minutes late.
He realized the mistake and knew his weight would not count . He
released approximately 22 pounds which would have kept him in the top five.
The four largest walleyes weighted on day two were worth $4,375 from
Walleye Angler, the specialty catalog from Bass Pro Shops. The largest
8.30 lbs. was worth $1850 for amateur Bruce Nelson of Erskine MN.
Second 8.04 lbs. paid $1200 to Mike Gofron a pro from Antioch IL.
The third place big fish 7.70 lbs. earned $800 for amateur Neele Kruse
from Fort Pierre SD and fourth place of $725 weighting 7.48 lbs. was caught
by touring pro Mark Brumbaugh of Pittsburgh OH.
Anglers continued to report on their tactics which included a variety
of jigging, rigging and bottom bouncing with large chubs and shiners and
also some trolling of crankbaits. They fished depths ranging from
10 to 60 feet. Pros will share specifics with walleye fans after
Fridays weight in ceremonies at Lighthouse Pointe.

Boat - Targa 2000
Flight Number 1 Due back at 3:45 p.m.
Gary and I used a live-bait presentation. The Walleye Angler Rods and
Reels
were very sensitive and worked perfectly as we were landing our fish.
The
"Dead Stick" technique was also productive, several fish were caught
using
this method. Gary's fishing expertise and professionalism was
evident as
he kept the boat on a precise depth and location with the Minn Kota
Maxxum
Trolling Motor. The Lowrance Global Map 2000 and the bow mounted mapping
unit helped Gary stay on the spots located pre-fishing with his son.
The
short ride to the weigh-in site at Lighthouse Point on Lake Oahe was
very
pleasant in the Targa. The 20' boat rides like a dream.

Press Release Day Three

For Immediate Rel
Parsons Wins PWT #3 and $50,000 1st Place Check
Pierre, SD . . Wire-to-wire, Gary Parsons, pro walleye angler from
Chilton, WI, held the lead and w PowerBait/LubriMatic Midwest Pro-Am and
$50,000 on Lake Oahe. The South Dakota victory was his finest acomplishment
Parsons won the prestigious In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail
(PWT) Angler of the Year title 3 and 1994, has 11 top-10 place finishes
and moved to second on the all-time PWT money list. The 43 old former dentist
is a full-time angler and fishing promotions specialist. He works closely
with key ine and tackle manufacturers to develop, innovate and promote
their products. He weighed 18 walleyes his amateur partners for 69.63 pounds.
Jumping from 23rd, pro Chris Gilman, Mosinee, WI, brought a 3-day PWT
60.61 pound catch to th es for second place and $15,000. Pro and full-time
Lake Oahe guide Dan Stier, Pierre, SD won $10,00 his 60.39 pound third-place
catch.
Parsons concentrated on five spots in Shanty Creek only seven miles
from Lighthouse Pointe nament headquarters. He fished 1 1/2 ounce Northland
Rock Runner bottom bouncers, nine foot snells #1 Mustad hooks baited with
big creek chubs. He watched his X-85 Lowrance (3000 watts of power) the
sensitivity set at maximum. Fish at 50 to 60 feet appeared over silt as
a “thicker bottom line.” W occurred, Parsons hovered over them until they
crushed the chub. He then described a teasing method ouraging the fish
to really hang on. “This is as big a break-through as suspended fish,”
he said. But, it ains a secret for now, at least until Parsons chases the
Angler of the Year title at the next PWT stop in Fort Peck Reservoir,
July 22 - 24.
The Lake Oahe weather allowed anglers to run and fish the methods of
their choice. The $12,500 ning amateur was Edward Arbogast, Isanti, MN,
after fishing with pros Ted Takasaki, Algonquin, IL, M Clelland, Pierre,
SD and Keenan Miller, Mandan, ND.
The overall big fish paid $2,350 to amateur Bruce Nelson, Erskine,
MN. He will also win a graphit ica of his walleye, while a duplicate will
be displayed at the Bass Pro Shops retail store in Gurnee, IL. won a Bass
Pro tackle system, as did his pro partner Stier. Walleye Angler first place
big fish on the fi paid $1,850 to amateur John Phillips, E. Peoria, IL.
It weighed 7.34 pounds. The second place fish, 7. nds, was worth $1,200
to amateur Perry Krush, Rapid City, SD. Third, 7.21 pounds, was caught
by teur Nelson for $800. Fourth place paid $750 to pro Charlie Johnson,
Merrifield, MN for a 7.17-pound
A special award went to amateur Krush for the largest catch on the
final day. He won a Flambeau 000 tackle system. The amateur advancing 95
places, Charlie Christofferson, Park Rapids, MN, won th eman Cool Under
Pressure $600 award. The Storm Heavyweight amateur winner, Richard Ness,
Rutht won $300 of Storm Lures.
On the pro side, Joe Lundquist, Osseo, MN, advanced 66 places and won
$1,000 as the Coleman Co er Pressure angler. The heaviest one-day weight,
the Storm Heavyweight winner, was pro Mike Gofro och, IL. He won $500.
For releasing 17 of his 18 walleye limit, pro Chris Gilman, Chisago City,
MN $500 from T-H Marine as the live release award winner.
A huge crowd of cheering walleye fans visited Lighthouse Pointe Resort
as the pros concluded their e Oahe tournament and set their sights farther
west to the final tournament in Montana. Dave Spaid, re, leads the EXIDE
Rookie of the Year race, while the Mariner Top Amateur is Charlie Christofferson,
k Rapids, MN. Stier leads the tightest pro Angler of the Year race ever.
Only 26 pounds separates Stier m 40th place, the number of pros who will
be invited to the September Championship.

Day 3: June 26, 1998
Weather- The weather was calm with light winds.
Pro Partner- Ron Anlauf
Boat - Roughneck
Flight Number 3 Due Back at 4:45 p.m.
Ron and I went to an area he'd located while pre-fishing. Again, we
used a live-bait presentation. We tried different live-baits, chubs, fatheads,
leeches, and crawlers. The rods were equipped with bottom-bouncers and
light leaders to feel the light bite. We also used the infamous "Roach-Rig"
live-bait presentation for the finicky walleye bite. I connected with
a 7.34# walleye to win the largest fish on the third day. The prize for
big-fish was $1850.00 in cash and prizes, included gift certificates for
Bass Pro Shops and the Walleye Angler Magazine. I split the prize equally
with Ron. At the weigh-in I had accumulated 58.17 pounds. I won second
place on the amateur side. $4000.00
Thanks go to The In-Fisherman and The Professional Walleye Trail.
Lighthouse Pointe Lodge. Pro's Dan DeJeaghere, Gary Parsons, and Ron
Anlauf. And special thanks to the sponsors who provided the prizes;
Bait
Rigs, Mariner, Coleman Coolers, Lubrimatic, Pinnacle, Dee Zee, T-H
Marine,
Stren, Normark, Drift Master, Charge Pro, Off-Shore, Flambeau, and
Northland Tackle.
The tournaments are lots of fun and I recommend them to any angler who
wants to learn from the best walleye anglers in the world!
